MATILDA ELIZABETH COILE was born August 13, 1858 in Rocky Valley Community, Jefferson County, TN, and died August 17, 1916 in Rocky Valley Community, Jefferson County, TN. She married JACOB M. OAKES August 31, 1873 in Jefferson Co., TN. He was born April 1852, and died November 06, 1908 in Jefferson Co. TN.

Elizabeth Coile Oakes was the daughter of Lafayette Coile and Malinda McKnight Coile. More about them later. She was raised in Rock Valley Community just northeast of Knoxville, TN. She had 14 children but only five survived to adulthood. The last of these was my grandfather, Elmer Burchel Oakes. He was 14 years old when she died. He remembered that by this time she was blind. She died eight years after Jacob, her husband. Although I can't place my hands on it now, we used to have a small colored cut glass with her name on it. Supposedly this was purchased as a birthday present for her. I think it had the year 1908 on it.
Jacob and Elizabeth were not rich. They sharecropped like most of their neighbors.
